In Physical Education, two learning segments I would build into my edTPA Lesson Plans are fitness concepts and lifelong wellness and teamwork through cooperative games. Fitness is more than just exercise. It is about showing students why activity matters and how it supports their long-term health. Cooperative games add another layer by giving students a chance to practice strategy, communication, and sportsmanship while staying active. As a coach I know the way you start often sets the tone for everything that follows. Wong and Wong (2012) states, "your success during the school year will be determined by what you do on the first days of school" (p. 3). In fitness lessons, that means establishing clear expectations and routines so students understand what success looks like. Reeves (2011) explains, "great teaching begins not with the lesson plan book, but with the teacher's thinking about student learning" (p. 1). This reinforces my belief that every PE activity has to be purposeful, whether the goal is reaching a target heart rate or practicing teamwork.

Scaffolding also plays a big role on how I can use effective instruction. Vygotsky (1978) described the Zone of Proximal Development as "the distance between the actual developmental level as determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers" (p. 86). In practice, this could look like teaching a new movement in steps. I might start by modeling the movement, then give students guided practice, and finally raise the challenge until they can perform it independently.

Another key piece is making lessons culturally responsive to the student. Hammond (n.d.) explains this in her video when she states, "culturally responsive teaching is about building the learning capacity of the individual student" (4:10). In PE, that means recognizing the value of activities students already bring with them from their social activites. When students see their experiences reflected in class, they feel motivated to take ownership of their learning.

In the end, effective learning segments in PE rely on clear expectations, intentional planning, scaffolding, and cultural responsiveness. By focusing on these elements, I can help students build physical skills and confidence while also preparing them with life habits that will benefit them beyond the gym.
