Based on the information I have learned about the health and safety hazards of flooding, I would recommend that in the event of flooding, residents should not try to evacuate through flooded roads, keep an emergency supply of bottled water on hand, and avoid wading through flood waters. Driving through flooded roads poses several risks, such as the vehicle getting swept away by moving water or parts of the road being washed away. Much of Washington state that is impacted by flooding relies on private or community wells for its drinking water. During times of flooding, there is an "increased risk of water contamination, and it is recommended that bottled water is used for drinking (Masciopinto et al., 2019)". Wading through flood water can prove especially hazardous as sewage and other contaminants are most likely in the water. "The greatest risk to nurses during a disaster is injury (Farokhzadian et al., 2024b)". During times of disaster, nurses, especially those on the front line, are pushed to the limit, increasing their risk of injury. To mitigate the risk to nurses, additional staff should be called in to assist.
