Boyle's law states that pressure of a gas is inversely proportional to its volume, meaning that as volume increases, pressure decreases, and vice versa. This principle is fundamental to pulmonary ventilation, as breathing depends on pressure gradients created by changes in thoracic cavity volume. During inspiration, the diaphragm contracts and the thoracic cavity expand, increasing lung volume and decreasing intrapulmonary pressure, which allows air to flow into the lungs. During expiration, the diaphragm relaxes, thoracic volume decreases, and pressure increases, forcing air out of the lungs (Betts et. al., 2022). In clinical practice, Boyle's law helps nurses understand conditions that impair ventilation, such as atelectasis or pneumothorax, where controlled pressure changes are used to assist or replace spontaneous breathing.
