Problem: The number of women who are incarcerated today exceeds seven times the number of women incarcerated in 1980 (Budd, 2024). In the year 1980, there were just over 26.000 women who were incarcerated. Kasturba and Sawyer (2024) report that there are 190,600 women and girls incarcerated in the United States. The number of women incarcerated in both the federal and state prison systems increased 4 % from the end of 2022 (87,800) to the end of 2023 (91,100). During this period, the number of men incarcerated increased by only 2%. (Mueller et al., n.d.). Kasturba and Sawyer (2024) collected data from government agencies to identify the number of women and girls incarcerated in specific state prisons, federal prisons, local jails, and juvenile correctional facilities. Data was also collected from Indian country jails, immigration detention facilities, military prisons, civil commitment centers, and prisons in the U.S. territories (Kasturba & Sawyer, 2024).
