Develop an understanding of how stratigraphy is applied


Assignment: Sedimentology and Stratigraphy

Goal: Investigate usage of stratigraphy in the scientific literature and develop an understanding of how it is applied. Practice searching for relevant scientific references and distilling main points of an article.

Task: Find a published, peer-reviewed article that uses stratigraphy in a scientific investigation (I recommend using Google Scholar). The paper should have a figure that shows some sort of stratigraphic correlation. Please complete a one page write-up that includes the following:

1) Your name

2) Full citation of the article (use APA format)

3) A paragraph summarizing the main points of the article

4) A paragraph with your own reaction / opinions (What did you think? Are there parts that were especially interesting to you? Parts you did not agree with? Parts you thought were confusing?)

5) A sentence that states the type of stratigraphic correlation used (lithostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, etc.)

6) On the back (or a separate sheet of paper), include a screenshot of a figure from the paper that shows the stratigraphic correlation in #5
