For instance, the stigma that surrounds mental illness in society often makes clients afraid of being judged or labeled, which can make them avoid or delay getting help and this is something that I personally see all the time at work. I am a case manager that works with families that have a domestic violence situation in their home, and often time I run into fathers and mothers who are reluctant to seek therapy because they are worried about how others will perceive them. Also, cultural beliefs may influence the interpretation of distress, as certain clients may depend on familial, spiritual, or communal support systems instead of professional counseling. Moreover, historical and persistent systemic biases in mental health systems can foster mistrust, especially among marginalized populations who have faced discrimination or misdiagnosis (Sue et al., 2009). When making a diagnosis, it's especially important to think about these things because cultural values and stressors in society can affect how symptoms are shown and understood.
