Cultural humility and the tic model overlap

Problem: Cultural humility and the TIC Model overlap particularly around awareness of power, self-reflection, and practice that is relationship centered. More specifically, they both recognize the imbalances in power, and emphasize the need for ongoing learning and focusing on client's lived experiences. I will embrace practices of cultural humility within my role as a social worker by accepting correction, avoiding assumptions of my clients, and treating them as experts on their own lives. For example, I can approach my clients by asking how their understanding of trauma is influenced by their cultural background, and I can reflect on how my social position may influence my engagement and assessment. 2. The readings have impacted how I see the systems in which our clients function because I have realized that systems like education, healthcare, criminal justice, etc., often cause harm or reinforced trauma. This especially applies to marginalized communities. From a micro perspective, I have a better understanding that client's behaviors are trauma responses and not personal failures. From a macro perspective, the readings highlight the need for policy change and advocacy change. TIC acknowledges that trauma is embedded in social structures and is not just a personal matter. 3. How can social workers simultaneously apply cultural humility and TIC while working in systems that could potentially contribute to retraumatization for clients?
