How communication works across cultures

Problem:

This week's readings helped me better understand how communication works across cultures and why intercultural competence is important in diverse environments. One key concept I learned is intercultural communication competence (ICC). According to Guo-Ming Chen and William J. Starosta, ICC refers to the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people from different cultural backgrounds. It involves knowledge about cultural differences, openness toward other cultures, and the communication skills needed to interact respectfully. Another concept that stood out to me is cultural intelligence (CQ). Richard Brislin and colleagues describe cultural intelligence as the ability to understand and adapt to different cultural situations. This concept highlights the importance of being aware that people may have different ways of thinking, behaving, and communicating depending on their cultural background. The third concept I found meaningful is behavioural adaptability, which refers to adjusting one's communication style and behaviour when interacting with people from different cultures. This could include being mindful of language, nonverbal communication, and cultural norms. In my workplace or group settings, I can apply this learning by practicing more culturally mindful communication. For example, I can listen more actively to diverse perspectives, avoid making assumptions, and be more open to different communication styles. Need Assignment Help?
