Comment on the Focus Group Discussion below:
Summary of the Focus Group findings
The focus group participants explored their levels of satisfaction and attitudes towards streaming services. Many of the participants had several different streaming services, including one that was a Chinese streaming service. Netflix automatically came as a default for the other 3 participants. When it comes to original content on streaming services, some of it isn't that great; they want something different. They wanted more variety when using streaming services and when deciding what content to watch. Some participants will look up an actor and find the categories of movies or TV shows they have done in the past, which can help them tailor what to watch. The environment participants are in affects the type of content they watch: if they are in the living room, they will watch something they can really focus on, whereas in the bedroom, they might watch something as background noise. They talked a bit about the algorithm and recommendations, how they are helpful, how they help figure out what to watch next, and how they take into account what has been watched, as well as whether it features a particular genre or celebrity. Pros for the Focus Group design
Many of the questions were open-ended, and the moderator did a good job of ensuring that all participants could share their opinions on specific platforms and how they feel about watching shows. Every participant gave their own opinion on each question. One in particular that comes to mind is the environment where people are watching shows. There was diversity in having someone who watches shows from a streaming service in another country. Many streaming services offer a variety of ways for audiences to choose which shows and movies they watch. The participants did a good job of giving their own perspective on whether they are watching the show based on celebrities, production companies pivoting to original content they knew was going to be good, or movies they have seen in the past.
Cons for the Focus Group design
The focus group was relatively small, and there was limited diversity in the streaming services used. A lot of the conversation was centered around Netflix, with some of it going to Amazon Prime. With only one participant using a different streaming service, the other participants tended to have similar answers about specific questions. Although there were a lot of open-ended questions, it did kind of feel repetitive within specific answers from the same participants
