Problem:

Personality and cognition are intricately interconnected constructs that have a predictive power on educational outcomes. This study aimed to investigate whether intelligence, conscientiousness and extraversion affect academic performance in university students. A sample of 150 students from University of Adelaide provided demographics and GPA percentage and then completed an online 100 item Stanford-Binet IQ test and pen and paper NEO PI R questionnaire under the supervision of a trained practitioner in a quite laboratory in campus. Pearson correlations analysis of the data showed a strong positive association between conscientiousness and academic performance, r = .76. IQ has insignificant association academic performance r = .02, and extraversion was not associated with academic performance r = -.02. The predictors displayed weak, non-significant intercorrelations. This study provides a foundation for future research to explore the correlations among intelligence, extraversion, and conscientiousness in relation to academic performance, while also investigating potential moderating factors and developing targeted interventions.
