Problem: Compare your experience with theirs. Did the same theory apply? Offer a new perspective, a different theory that might also apply, or a follow-up question that encourages reflection. One experience that really changed the way I think about motivation was when I worked at a company that manufactured electrical transformers. I started the job feeling very motivated because I wanted to prove to myself that I could succeed in a physically demanding job where I was the only woman working on the production floor. The pay was also much better than what I had earned before, so I was excited for the opportunity and wanted to show that I belonged there. At first, I worked hard every day and enjoyed proving that I could keep up with everyone else. Over time, though, the long hours became exhausting, and I experienced ongoing harassment at work. What had started as a job I was proud of slowly became something I dreaded going to each day, eventually I realized that no amount of good pay was worth sacrificing my well being. Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory helps explain my experience. In the beginning, motivators like achievement and personal accomplishment kept me engaged because I felt proud of what I was accomplishing. However, the hygiene factors eventually became major problems, the poor work environment, long hours, and harassment created dissatisfaction that outweighed the things I had once enjoyed about the job.
