Mise-en-scene.
Paper instructions:
1) Read Chapter 4 from Film Art on mise-en-scene. Pay particular attention to the boldface terms. You will need to know them for the midterm.
2) Watch both the films Children of Heaven and Aguirre: The Wrath of God.
3) Write 2 paragraphs as follows: 1) In your first paragraph, explain how mise-en-scene serves to advance the narrative themes in Children of Heaven. Your topic sentence should define the term “mise-en-scene” first. Be sure to include specific examples from the film to support your points. 2) In your second paragraph, explain how mise-en-scene advances the narrative themes in Aguirre: The Wrath of God. Your topic sentence can be something like: “Mise-en-scene also plays an important thematic role in the German film Aguirre: The Wrath of God, particularly in terms of its natural landscape settings.” Then take it from here. Again, be sure to include specific examples from the film to support your points.
