Civic Virtue and The Founding Fathers:

Athens or Sparta? Which of these ancient Greek city-states do you think had the most ideal institutions, and why? You may argue for one, or you may choose to argue for different aspects of each.

Paper instructions:

Athens or Sparta? Which of these ancient Greek city-states do you think had the most ideal institutions, and why? You may argue for one, or you may choose to argue for different aspects of each.

To make your argument, you will need to research the social and political structures of both of these cities using only scholarly sources. See these links for what this means:

To be safe, you may want to avoid the Internet all together, except to locate sources, or download articles from Jstor.

First and foremost, DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. As I stated on the syllabus, you will get a ‘0’ on the assignment (which means you will FAIL THE COURSE), and you may be suspended from FSW.

You should start off with an outline to draft your ideas and structure your paper.

You must use examples from scholarly sources with page numbers, and CITE, CITE, CITE (I prefer footnotes, but will accept endnotes or parenthetical documentation).

Papers must be 1,500 words, and double-spaced. Include the final word count on last page.

Use 12-point font in Times, Times New Roman, or Cambria.

Use only scholarly sources as discussed in class (or in the links above) to write your paper. For example, you may use books written by scholars, Jstor, Fordham University’s Internet History Sourcebook. Do not use the Internet for anything that is not “scholarly.” I am aware of what is available online. Provide page numbers for all quotes, paraphrases, and references otherwise, in footnotes (preferred) or parentheses. Remember to number your pages and include a word count on last page (papers must be 1,500 words in order to meet the college’s requirement).

• Your paper should have the following:

o An introduction that presents the topic and your thesis (the argument that you are going to make that answers topic question). The introductory paragraph should preview your main points.

o A body that gives evidence from the source and explains how it supports your thesis in focused paragraphs (mind your topic sentences – structure and organization are key).

o A short conclusion that restates your thesis & briefly reviews how you supported it.

• I am looking for:

o A strong, solid argument, supported by evidence.

o Good organization: your thesis is presented in an introduction, is developed and supported throughout the paper, and leads to a solid conclusion.

o A strong understanding of the content.

o Correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

• Include quotes/paraphrasing from the sources that support the point you are trying to make, but do not just use quotes to pad your paper (i.e. to take up space). Make sure that your use of any quote makes sense and helps your argument, and does not simply take up space
