Case of climate change or other forms of habitat destruction

Problem: In the case of climate change or other forms of habitat destruction it would seem that it is acceptable for us to allow significant losses as long as we still have natural environments we can appreciate, if we go with the "we value it" option. On other hand, it would seem to call for more attention and prioritization, if we go with the "it is valuable by itself" option. Does the first option or second option seem appropriate in this light?
