So, it is up to the moral agent whether or not to perform an action. He or she must decide whether or not to possess a specific trait; it cannot be compelled externally. The moral agent must be conscious of what he or she is doing or causing.
There is also disagreement on whether the moral agent should be praised for his or her deeds or for dispositional characteristics of character. If the agent is commended or punished for his or her actions, there is an opportunity for him or her to change their character or disposition. If they are acknowledged for their character, it can have the intended effect on their behavior
