Building an effective school counseling program


Problem:

Using evidence-based interventions and best practices is fundamental to building an effective school counseling program. The evidence-based practices and interventions utilized by school counselors increase the effectiveness of school counseling programs. By using evidence-based interventions and best practices, school counselors help build accountability within schools and enhance school counseling programs. ASCA's National Model guides school counselors in making data and research based decisions as opposed to making decisions based on personal experience and opinion or intuition. Also, school counselors must advocate for the school counseling program with other stakeholders and data on program results such as student academic achievement, attendance and behavior are fundamental to the argument for continued program funding and support. There has been considerable dialogue in the fields of school counseling and youth development related to several challenges including how to best support the academic achievement of students who are struggling socially-emotionally, as well as the social skills of youth in general. More recently, there has been conversation around the issues of how to effectively implement research-based school counseling programs in schools. As Durlak et al.
