As an emerging clinical mental health counselor, group therapy is one of the most effective and relationally meaningful approaches for treating substance use disorders. For example, psychoeducational groups may require minimal screening, while interpersonal process groups demand a higher level of emotional stability and readiness for vulnerability. I would also assess exclusion factors such as inability to maintain confidentiality, impulsivity, or acute crisis (SAMHSA, 2015, p. xvii).
If I determined a client needed an alternative treatment, I would approach the referral process collaboratively and with respect. I would clearly explain the rationale and provide options such as individual therapy, medication-assisted treatment, or 12-step programs. Capuzzi and Stauffer (2024) highlight the importance of being knowledgeable about community resources and self-help groups to support effective referrals (pp. 320-321).
