Collaboration between school counselors-classroom teachers


Problem:

Collaboration between school counselors and classroom teachers can be a dual-benefit relationship for both parties involved when aiming to enhance classroom management. Teachers have deeper insight into student behaviors as they spend day-in and day-out with their students. Collaborating with teachers helps counselors understand how each students learns best, which students respond better to tough-love and which need to be coddled a little extra, etc. Teachers can also provide counselors with specific classroom management strategies that have proven to work well for their students. This assists counselors in an effective delivery of counseling lessons based on the specific student needs of that classroom. Additionally, collaborating with teachers helps school counselors tailor their lessons to the needs of the population as a whole, or more specifically for each grade/classroom. For me personally, I make sure to check in with teachers every month to identify which behaviors need to be targeted through social-emotional learning lessons. Tailoring lessons to the needs of the classroom is especially important at the elementary level considering the major age and cognitive differences between kindergarten through fifth grade students. If there is a topic that is big enough that it is effecting the school-wide population, the counselor can make developmentally appropriate lessons based on the same topic.
