This is another response: Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapies require clients to use a large amount of cognitive processing; however, survivors of trauma tend to have impaired cognitive functioning, which means a cognitive behavioral therapy will be less likely to help (Kuhfuß et al., 2021). There is also a high dropout rate in therapies that use exposure-based interventions due to their confrontational and unpleasant nature (Kuhfuß et al., 2021). Somatic Experiencing is a body-focused therapy (Brom et al., 2017). The goal is to create awareness in the body to reduce arousal that happens as a trauma response. The focus of therapy is bodily sensations and how they change as the client learns to focus on positive sensations or memories. Therefore, clients do not need to relive or retell their entire traumatic experience to alleviate their symptoms; these memories are approached carefully and gradually, keeping the focus on releasing tension in the body.
