Apple is the preeminent consumer products company in the world and considers itself too big to fail. Tim Cook and his team recently exhorted the company's developers to continue promoting its software platform. Despite this, Apple remains focused on hardware as its primary income source. In the short-term this makes perfect sense because significant revenues come from its high-end smartphones and other hardware. Nevertheless, Google and Microsoft see the future is not in hardware, but in software and services.
