Be sure to approach this with an understanding of the difference amongst sects within Christianity (as the dominant religion in the US) as well as non-Christians. Should schools use a Catholic prayer or a Baptist one? What about Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, or Wiccan prayers? Satanists have recently become more engaged in promoting their religion in the public sphere. Would they qualify for being allowed to have religious practices observed during school sponsored events and during class time? How about the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (members are known as Pastafarians, and yes I am serious)? How do non-religious, atheist, and agnostic students guarantee their 1st amendment rights to be free of governmental authority inducing religious behavior?
