Problem:
There are many ethical and legal parameters related to administering and interpreting assessment tools that those conducting assessments need to be aware of. To start, professionals need to consider the reliability and validity of the assessment itself, as well as, how generalizable the assessment is to the client. Assessments can only be considered valid and reliable if they are conducted using similar conditions as they were originally tested in and when they are used for the population they were created for (Arslan, 2018). If an assessment was meant to be conducted in a quiet and secluded room but was actually conducted in a very loud and busy environment, the results could be invalid and unreliable due to the test conditions being different. In addition to this, if an assessment was created to be used for an English speaker in a western culture, it will not be considered valid or reliable when used with someone who speaks Russian and is not apart of a western culture due to a difference in culture norms and the language barrier. When possible, assessments should be written or spoken in the client's native language so that they can fully understand what each question means and answer accurately (Arslan, 2018). Legally, profession- also need to obtain the client's, or their legal guardians, informed consent before administering an assessment tool as well. The client typically has the right to decide if they want to participate in the assessment and they can only do this when they have all the necessary information to make a fully informed decision (Arslan, 2018).
