A boy of mass 35 kg and a girl of mass 40 kg are skating

1. A ball of mass 0.50 kg is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed of 30 m/s.

a. Use the Work-Kinetic Energy theorem to calculate the maximum height reached.

b. Use the Work-Kinetic Energy theroem to calculate the speed of the ball at half the maximum height.

c. Is the gravitational force conservative or non-conservative? Explain your answer*.

d. Could parts a and b be calculated using the conservation of mechanical energy? Explain how, and then calculate parts a and b using the conservation of mechanical energy.

2. A boy of mass 35 kg and a girl of mass 40 kg are skating towards each other with speeds of 2.5 m/s, and 2.0 m/s respectively. When they meet, they clasp hands and continue to move together.

a. Assume that there is no friction, and find their combined velocity after they meet.

b. Chech if the kinetic energy is conserved in this collision. How would you classify the collision? If the kinetic energy is not conserved, find the percentage loss in kinetic energy.
