Mechanism of Breathing:
The procedure of inspiration and expiration occurs due to pressure changes in the thoracic cavity. The thorax is a sealed compartment bounded by the sternum in front, the vertebral column at back, the ribs encircling the sides and the diaphragm found beneath. The rib bones are given with the two sets of muscles viz. external and internal inter-costal muscles.
By the contraction and expansion of such muscles the volume of the thoracic cavity is decreased or increased. The floor of the thoracic cavity is entirely closed by the diaphragm. The act of breathing is executed by expansion and contraction of the thoracic cavity.
