Introduction to Human Factors and Human Engineering
Before discussing the various steps of human engineering , we would like to discuss about the human factors and some related aspects of it.
All large firms have a human resources function that handles much of the specialized processing concerning the firm personnel. A computer system almost always has a human element. A person may directly interact with hardware and software and people are responsible for the development, deployment and maintenance of the system.
The organizational structure of most firms includes a unit that is responsible for many of the activities related to the personnel resource. The term personnel were originally given to these units, but the practice today is to use the name human resource (HR) or human factors. Our perception of the human element of computer based system has changed in recent year. In early day sit was needed that the user should communicate in way that was easy to implement. The user friendly concept has come into the market. So human factors are related to human engineering. Human engineering is recognized as an important step in system development for computer based systems.
In the computer based system, it is the obvious concept that the human factors will interact with the computer system. And the human computer interaction (HCI) will occur. Generally when people interact with other people that is human to human interaction in which they interact and communicate with their voice and a culturally defined set of rules whereas in HCI this does not happen. Before a system engineer can allocate function to the human element, the interaction necessary to perform function must be specified. To do this, the components of the human element should be understood. They are human memory and knowledge representation, thinking and reasoning, visual perception and human dialog constructions.
Human engineering an essential step related to the human factors. Is a multidisciplinary activity that applies knowledge derived from psychology and technology to specify and design high quality HCI? There are various steps of the human engineering, shown diagrammatically in fig1.22.
1. Activity analysis
2. Semantic Analysis and design
3. Syntactic and lexical design
4. User environment design
5. Prototyping
