A hearing aid is an electronic, battery-operated machine which amplifies and changes sound to permit for improved communication. Hearing aids obtain sound via a tiny microphone, which then transforms the sound waves to electrical signals. The amplifier raises the loudness of the signals and then sends the sound to the ear via a speaker in an ear piece that fits into an outer ear canal. The electric signals are transformed back to the sound waves.

The volume control on aid generally operated by turning a small wheel enables the level of received sound to be adjusted.
More powerful aids which amplify sound to a greater level are available. In such aids the microphone, amplifier and battery are contained in a bigger case worn on the body; the currents is carried to the ear piece by a thin wire. Most of the people with conductive deafness particularly when there is an infection or discharge in the ear canal might be given a bone conduction hearing aid. This kind of hearing aid might be fitted to a glass frame or hair band.

Other machines available for the hard-of-hearing comprise amplified telephone receivers, flashing lights rather than door bells and telephone bells, vibrators which respond to sound, head phone for television sets, teletype writers and conduct dogs for the deaf.
