Cataract

Cataract:

Cataract is the opacity in the lens of eye. The normal lens permits light to reach the retina whenever it becomes opaque and does not permit light to reach the retina; the person is not capable to see clearly. Cataract is due to (i.e., coagulation) modifications in the delicate protein fibers in the lens; cataract never causes total blindness though causes raised loss of transparency. The clarity and the detail of the image are progressively lost. The front portion of the lens becomes densely opaque and whiteness is evident in the pupil.

The causes for cataract formation in the adult is associated to aging, smoking, sun light exposure, poor nutrition, eye trauma, systematic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, infection and injuries and certain medications like steroids. At times German measles in pregnant mothers causes cataract in the infant.

To delay the beginning of cataract one must have nourishing diet, X-rays, protect eye from excessive exposure to sun rays, intense heat and damages. Diseases such as diabetes and syphilis must be treated early and efficiently.

Two kinds of cataracts are dense nuclear cataract (i.e., cataract in the center of the lens) and Peripheral cataract (i.e., cataract in the periphery of the lens). There is no medical healing for cataract. The only treatment is surgery. Once the cataract is eliminated, the eye is unable to focus, as there is no lens. Therefore one has to utilize an artificial lens. This can either be glasses, contact lenses or insertion of introcular lenses.

Today current medical advances have made cataract surgery very successful. Latest surgical methods and intracular lenses can restore outstanding vision (i.e., 97%).
