Blood Pressure:
Blood pressure is the force exerted by the flow of blood alongside the walls of the major arteries while flowing via them. Blood pressure increases or falls as the heart responds to the differing demands made by the body during various activities like stress exercise, and sleep.
Two kinds of pressure are measured. Systolic (i.e., the highest) is the pressure produced, by the ventricular muscle and the elastic recoil of the aorta (i.e., main vessel leaving the heart) as the blood flows via it. Diastolic pressure (i.e., the lowest) is recorded during relaxation of the ventricles among beats. This reflects the resistance of all small arteries in the body and the load against which the heart should work. The pressure wave transmitted all along the arteries with each heart beat is felt as pulse.
Blood pressure is measured by using a sphygmomanometer. A healthy adult has a blood pressure reading of around 120/80 mm Hg (120 mm of Hg - systolic and 80 mm Hg - diastolic). This frequently rises generally with age to around 130/90 at 60. Abnormally high blood pressure is termed as hyper tension. Hyper tension is defined as “Systolic pressure equivalent to or greater than 160 mm Hg and (or) the diastolic pressure equivalent to or greater than 95 mm Hg”. Unusually low pressure is known as hypotension.
