Introduction to Procedural Languages

Procedural languages  are the  conventional languages in which  programs are decomposed into computation steps that perform complex operations. Routines are  used as modularization units to define  such  computation steps. So  the programmer knows  that what  is the task to be  accomplished and  how it can be  accomplished. That  means he knows both  what  and how  parts. So  accordingly he  writes the  code to define  each step required to accomplish the task.

Procedural languages are Ada CASIC C, C++, COBOL, FORTRAN , Pascal etc. Example 1 consider a program segment  task shown  in fig 6.1, which  computes the  addition of four numbers to show the concept of procedural languages. Fig 6.1 illustrates the  what and how parts of it.

Step 1: Add number 1 and number2.

Step 2: Add third number and the result of step 1.

Step 3: Add fourth number and  the result  of step 2.
