Introduction to Pipes and Filters

A component  in a pipe and filter system, as shown  in fig 5.25, has streams  of data called pipes for input and output. Often the  transformation of the  data form  input to  output is begins before the component called a filter, finishes reading the input stream. In this type of system each filter works independently of those components of up streams and down streams. Each  filter doesn't  require knowledge of the working  of its  neighboring filets. Additionally, the correctness of the system output doesn't  depend on the  order in  which the filters are applied.

There  are several properties of pipe and filter system:

  • Since any two filters can be linked together, the filters can be reused easily on other systems.

Drawbacks of this Architecture

They encourage batch processing and they are not  good for handling interactive applications.
