Creating a Data Flow Diagram

Data flow diagram enables the software engineer to develop models of the information flow and functional domain at the same time. As the level increases, analyst performs an implicit functional decomposition of the system. At the same time it also refines the data as it moves through the process that embodies the application. There are some guidelines to create a data flow diagram. They are given below.

1. Level o DFD should depict the entire system as single bubble along with all the related entities processing with the system.

2. Primary input should be carefully noted.

3. Refinement should begin isolating the candidate processes data objects and stores to be represented at the next level.

4. All arrows and bubbles should be named with meaningful names.

5. Tnformation flow continuity must be maintained at the next level.

6. Only one bubble should be refined at a time.

7. A good dataflow diagram should not process.

  • Loops ,
  • A process which is taking a pure decision,
  • Flow lines crossing each other and,
  • Splitting of a data flow into different flows with different meaning.

Logical and Physical DFD

All the DFD discussed earlier represented logical process operations that are to be performed by the system. Such DFD are known as logical DFD they specify various logical processes. Instead of logical processes. If DFD represents objects which perform the logical operations, that it is known as physical DFD?

In fig 4.15, the logical DFD is shown to process the order of vendor.  If order is accepted then it the inventory the process is   updated otherwise it is rejected.

In fig 4.16, the physical DFD is shown when vender requests for his delivery note then it is checked by the clerk, if accepted then stored otherwise if rejected then returned back.
