Introduction to Available Operations

Most programming languages provide basic  arithmetic  relational and logical operations. These operations are discussed below:

(a) Arithmetic Operations: As such there  are four basic operations which  are generally used in most  of the  languages  to perform the arithmetic  operations. They are shown  in table  6.3.

Example 38. Suppose that a and b are two integer variables in C whose value are 10 and 3 respectively. Several arithmetic  expressions involving these variables  are  shown in table 6.4, together  with their  resulting values.

(b) Relational and Logical Operations : As such the  there  are four  relational  operators  which  are used to perform  relational operations between variables. They  are illustrated in table 6.5,

These operators all fall in the same  precedence group, which is lower  than the arithmetic and unary operators. The associativity  of those  operators is  left to right.

Closely associated with the relational  are the following  equality operators  shown in table 6.6,

In addition to these relational operators, some  programming  languages provide logical  operators also. Three important logical operators used are AND OR  and NOT. The  values ( or result ) of these  can be 0 or 1 or TRUE and FALSE.

Example 39. Suppose than i,j, and k are  integer variable  in C whose  values  are 1 ,2 and 3  respectively. Several logical expressions involving  these  variable  are shown  in table 6.7.
