Sewage is the utilized and waste water including of human excreta, and industrial & agricultural wastes, wash waters that enter the sewage system. In common, sewage has 95% water and 5% organic and inorganic materials. The solid stays in suspended form in water. There are numerous techniques of sewage treatment on small scale like cesspools and septic tanks. Sewage or waste water treatment plans to purify the water for use again or recycling. There are three significant treatments for disposal of waste water. These are primary, secondary & tertiary treatments:

Primary treatment:

Primary treatment is the physical elimination of 20-30% of organic materials present in sewage in particulate form. It eliminates only suspended solids and floating matter. The particulate material is eliminated by screening, precipitation of little particulate and settling in basin or tanks where the raw sewage is piped into enormous and open tanks. The solid material (i.e., sludge) is eliminated and kept in landfill or composting for anaerobic digestion.  The liquid part is piped into sludge tanks. The accumulated materials in sludge tanks are subjected to aluminum sulfate or the other coagulants and hence the suspended particles, organic materials and microorganisms must be trapped as in sedimentation procedure of water purification. Primary treatment of sewage eliminates 30-40% of the BOD and secondary treatment is essential for suitable BOD reduction
