Biogas production

Biogas production:

Biogas is generated via a procedure of anaerobic fermentation of organic materials. Biogas consists of 55-70 percent methane and 30-45 percent carbon-dioxide and also small quantities of gases such as ammonia and hydrogen sulphide. The anaerobic digestion is taken out in an air tight cylindrical tank that is termed as biogas digester. A digester is made up of concrete bricks & steel. Gas holder is made up of steel that moves up and down on guide according to amount of gas stored in it. The sides of the drum stay in the slurry to seal the leakage of gas. This kind of digester is termed as floating drum.

Operation of biogas plants:

Cow-dung is mixed with equivalent amount of water and made into slurry and fed via the inlet into the biogas digester. The digestion proceeds about a temperature of 35°C, at pH 6.8 to 7.5 and with adequate quantity of nitrogen and phosphorus. The production of gas sets 40-50 days. The gas generated in the digester is accumulated in the drum and is employed as a fuel via an opening on the top of the gas holder drum.

Production of biogas:

Under anaerobic situation, production of biogas is accomplished in three phases, namely hydrolytic fermentative, acetogenic & methanogenic phases.
