Introduction of S-block:
The S-block is a block placed in the periodic table that comprises of the first two groups, firstly the alkali metals and secondly the alkaline earth metals. The elements in the s-block generally show distinct trends in their chemical and physical properties, varying steadily moving down the groups. Their properties can easily describe in terms of their electronic configuration with their valence electrons occupying positions in s-orbitals. As per this definition, hydrogen and helium are sometimes also taken as a part of the s-block.
Properties of S-Block Elements
The modern periodic law says that an element's chemical and physical properties are generally periodic function of its atomic number. Long type of periodic table is based on modern periodic law. Long form is classified into four blocks called as s, p, d, and f. In an atom of an s-block element, the last electron enters in the s-orbital of the outermost electron shell.
Group 1:
Hydrogen (Z=1), Lithium (Z=3), Sodium (Z=11), Potassium (Z=19), Rubidium (Z=37), Caesium (Z=55), Francium (Z=87).
Group 2:
Beryllium (Z=4), Magnesium (Z=12), Calcium (Z=20), strontium (Z=38), Barium (Z=56), Radium (Z=88).
Anomalous properties of Lithium:
In alkali metal cations, lithium owns the smallest size and highest polarizing power. This characteristic differentiates lithium from its other family members. Lithium's covalence character is more, which is accountable for the solubility of it in organic solvent.
