Atomic and Ionic Radii:
The atomic and ionic radii of transition elements are smaller in size than those of p-block elements and bigger than those of s-block elements. Atomic and ionic radii of primary transition elements are given in table shown below: Table: Atomic radii of elements of primary transition series
The atomic radius of primary transition series reduces from Sc to Cr and stays almost constant till Cu and then rises towards end. This can be demonstrated based on two effects that is, screening and the nuclear charge effect. These two effects oppose each other resultant in raise in nuclear charge. Therefore very slight variation in atomic radii from Cr to Cu is noticed. It has been noticed that Zirconium and Hafnium have almost equivalent atomic radii. This is since of lanthanide contraction.
