Introduction to Superhet Radio Receiver
This receiver works within the standard of heterodying. Current radio receivers are mainly of superheterodyne types. It is containing converter stage that changes the incoming single into intermediate frequency (IF) singnals.
GANGRED CAPACITORS
Ganged capacitors are the two variable capacitors are fitted in a common shaft. One variable capacitor is employed to choose the wanted Radio station at the RF stage and the other one is employed in oscillator stage to generate the appropriate oscillator frequency to the needed radio station.
GANGED TUNNING
Selecting needed radio station Ganged capacitors is termed as Ganged tunning.
PRINCIPLE OF SUPERHET RECEIVER
The procedure of beating (mixing) two dissimilar signals to generate new signal is termed as Heterodying.
If two dissimilar signals are mixed by a transistor, four types of signals are acquired in the output of the transistor. They are.
1. Fisrt signal (Fo)
2. Second signal (Fs)
3. Addition of the two (Fo+Fs)
4. Variation between the two (Fo-Fs)
Different from these, a not wanted signal called Harmonics is generated because of the mixing of the two signals. Out of them, the dissimilar among the two is taken like Intermediate Frequency (IF) and the left over signals are filtered. This is termed as Principle of Superheterodying. The receivers that follow this principle is termed as super bet receivers. This principle is employed in AM, FM, Radar, Communication and Television receivers.
MERITS
1. Good selectivity and sensitivity
2. Good fidelity
3. Good stability
DEMERITS
1. It requires Alignment and tracking
2. Complicated circuits are employed
INTERFERENCES IN SUPERHET RADIO RECEIVER
Usually, Superhet receivers comprise better sensitivity and selectivity.
But the following two interferences are happened.
1. Image frequency
2. Adjacent channels interference.
IMAGE FREQUENCY AND METHOD OF REJECTING IT
If two near radio station start received at a time, this type of defect is said to be image Frequency. Rejecting image frequency relies on the selectivity of RF stage. It have to be rejected before IF stage. One time it enters IF stage, it can't be rejected.
ADJACENT CHANNEL INTERFERENCE
In superhet receiver while the bandwidth is decreased from necessary level, this kind of interference is developed. While two dissimilar radio station are chosen very closely, interference. To remove this, low IF signal should be choose. Thus, in superhet receivers, intermediate frequency (IF signal) is preferred to prevent both the interferences. In double conversion receivers these two interferences are removed entirely, because they make use of two dissimilar IF signals, one is high and another is low. Thus a double conversion receiver should comprise two converters and two IF amplifiers.
