Precautions and Saucepan Type

Introduction to Precautions and Saucepan Type:

Precautions:

i) Water level all the time should be above the heater element if not the element gets overheated and might burst.

ii) The kettle has not switched ON without water.

iii) The water should not be touched while the supply is ON.

Saucepan type:

In this type the heating element is wound around a flat mica sheet like in iron box. Here the heating element is located in separate room that is outside bottom part of the heater body and is covered through bottom cover. The construction of saucepan type is displayed in the below diagram.

Heating element:

The heating element builds up of Nichrome ribbon resistance wire wound over flat mica sheet. This is a place among two circular sheets that is why the Nichrome wire might not come in contact with some metallic piece of the kettle. The heating elements' two ends are connected to the outlet socket terminals of the kettle by two brass strips.

A. Bolt, nut and washer holding bottom cover

B. Heating element

C. Asbestos sheet

D. Sole-plate

E. Pressure plate

F. Bottom cover

G. Handle

H. Top lid

I. Ebonite leg

J. 10.Outlet socket

K. Brass strips

Asbestos sheet:

This is located below the heating element and mica insulation to work as a heat insulator. As well it decreases the heat loss in the kettle.

Sole plate:

The sole plate is build up of cast iron and is of flat surface. It is given to keep the heating element in closed contact along with the container and to prevent deformation of the element while heated.

Pressure plate:

This is made up of cast iron and that is fitted on the middle bolt, through a nut. It holds the sole plate in position. If this pressure plate is fitted loosely, the sole plate and the heating element also become loose. This leads to contraction and expansion of the element throughout working and the element will find damaged.

Bottom cover:

It is fitted to the central bolt of the body through a nut and washer. On removal of the bottom cover the terminals and heating elements could be viewed / accessed.

Working:

The principal of working is similar for both of water kettle. While electric supply is provided to the heating element of water kettle, the current which flows by high resistance heating coil generates heat. So the electrical energy is converted into heat by water kettle and the water inside the kettle gets heated because of convection.
