Construction:

The major parts are

1) Bakelite handle

2) Pilot lamp

3) Steel cover

4) Chrome plated, cast iron sole plate

5) Built in automatic heat adjustment

6) Cord

Thermostats:

A thermostat is a switch that can be designed to close or open a circuit at the temperature that was predetermined. One of the most simple and most dependable components in the modern heating appliances is the "BIMETAL THERMOSTAT".

Bimetal thermostat:

The standard behind a bimetallic strip thermometer depends on the fact that dissimilar metals extent at dissimilar rates like they warm up. Through bonding two dissimilar metals together, we can create a simple electric controller which can withstand quite high temperatures. The usual layout is displayed in the diagram (General layout of Bimetal Thermostat).

There is a bimetal strip made up of two strips of metal with dissimilar expansion rates welded together in the thermostat. The metal strip extends while heated and contacts while cooled. In the bimetal strip one metal has a high rate of expansion while heated and another has a low rate. While a bimetal strip is heated both of the metals in the strip expand but the one at the bottom as displayed in the diagram (A fixed bimetallic strip bends when it is heated), along with a high rate of expansion, extends faster and forces the upper half to curl up/ bend away from the contact point. The strip curls or bends adequate to break the contact that is opening the circuit. Like the strip cools, it straightens and restores contact along with the stationary point.

The bending of the bimetal strip on heating is in the direction of the side which has smaller expansion rate. Through adjusting the size of the gap among the strip and the contact, you can manage the temperature. A simplify sketch of Adjustable Thermostat is displayed in the diagram (Simplified sketch of Adjustable Thermostat)
