Regions of a typical root:
The four regions are distinguished in a root as explained below:
1. Root Cap:
This is a cap like structure which covers the apex of the root. The main function of the root cap is to defend the root apex.
2. Meristematic Zone or Zone of cell division:
It is the growing tip of the root. This lies at little beyond the root cap. The cells of this area are actively dividing and continuously rise in number.
3. Zone of elongation:
This is a region which lies just above the meristematic zone. The cells of this region augment in size. This zone aids in the growth in length of the plant root.
4. Zone of cell differentiation: (Cell maturation)
This is a region that lies above the zone of elongation. In this zone the cells distinguish into various types. They form the tissues similar to the epidermis, cortex and vascular bundles. In this area a number of root hairs are too existed. The root hairs are responsible for absorbing minerals and water from the soil.
