Small hydrophobic molecules and Gases diffuse directly across the phospholipid bilayer at a rate proportional to their capability to liquefy in a liquid hydro carbon. Transport of molecules occurs all along the concentration gradient and no metabolic energy is expanded in this procedure. This can be explained as ‘downhill transport’. The diffusion through the bio membrane occurs in two ways:
a. Diffusion of fat-soluble substances via plasma membrane merely by dissolving in the lipid bilayer.
b. Diffusion of ions and water soluble substances: This occurs via pores in the membranes.
