a. Agar-agar:
This substance is employed as a culture medium whereas growing fungi and bacteria in the laboratory. It is also employed in the

preparations of some cosmetics and medicines. It is acquired from red algae Gracillaria and Gelidium.

b. A Phycocolloid Alginic acid is acquired from brown algae. Algin is employed as emulisifier in ice creams, cosmetics, and tooth pastes.

c. Idodine:

It is acquired from kelps (i.e., brown algae) particularly from species of Laminaria.

d. Diatomite:

This is a rock-like deposit made on the siliceous walls of diatoms (i.e., algae of Chrysophyceae). Whenever they die they sediment, and hence on the seabed and lake bottom extensive deposits can be made up over long time periods. The resultant ‘diatomaceous earth’ contains a high proportion of silica. Diatomite is employed as a fire proof material and as well as an absorbent.

It is employed in sound and fire proof rooms. It is also employed in packing of corrosive materials and as well in the manufacture of dynamite.
