Gluconeogenesis of lactic acid

Gluconeogenesis of lactic acid or Cori cycle:

The liver and skeletal muscles show a unique metabolic cooperation so far as carbohydrates are concerned via the way of a cycle of conversions termed as Cori cycle.

In this cori cycle liver glycogen might be transformed into muscle glycogen and vice versa and the main raw material of this cycle is lactate generated via the active skeletal muscles.

At the time of strenuous exercise or at the time heavy muscular work, O2 supply is insufficient in active muscles but the muscles maintain contracting to the maximum. Therefore, glycogen stored up in the muscle is transformed into lactic acid through the glycogenolysis followed via anaerobic glycolysis and so lactate gets accumulated in the muscle. Muscle tissue without the enzyme glucose 6-phosphatase therefore it is not capable of synthesizing glucose from lactic acid and the transformation occur only in the liver.

Lactate diffuses out of the muscle and after that enters the liver via blood. In the liver lactate is oxidised to pyruvate that goes through the process of gluconeogenesis resultant in the resynthesis of glucose. The glycogen might be again transformed to glucose (glycogenolysis) and might be recycled to the muscle via the blood. The procedure of gluconeogenesis completes the cycle via converting glucose again to muscle glycogen.
