Anaerobic phase

Anaerobic phase:

In the nonexistence of O2, at glyceraldehydes 3-phosphate dehydrogenase stage reoxidation of NADH cannot occur in respiratory chain. But the cells comprise limited coenzyme. Therefore to carry on the glycolysis NADH has to be reoxidized to NAD+. This is acquired through reoxidation of NADH via conversionof pyruvate to lactate (without generating ATP).

It is to be noticed that in the reaction catalyzed via glyceraldehydes 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, hence no ATP is generated.

Within the anaerobic phase oxidation of one glucose molecule generates

4-2=2 ATP.
