Whenever the supply is not available for the running motor, it will still continue running because of inertia. To stop it rapidly we need to place the load across armature winding and motor must have managed continuous field supply so that back e.m.f voltage is formed to apply across resistor and because of load motor stops rapidly.  Such type of breaking is said to be Regenerative Breaking.
