Protease-supplying cells
Why protease-supplying cells of stomach and of pancreas make only precursors of active proteolytic enzymes?
Expert
The stomach and pancreas create the zymogens of proteases pepsin, trypsin, and chymotrypsin and these zymogens are secreted in the gastric or duodenal lumen for activation. This occurs in order to prevent the digestion of these organs' own cells and tissues through the active form of enzymes. Thus, the production of zymogens is protective strategy against natural effects of proteolytic enzymes.
