  Types of Heterosporous plants

Types of Heterosporous plants:

In heterosporous plants two kinds of spores are generated.

A. Large spores termed as megaspores and
B. Small spores termed as mircrospores. 

Megaspores give mount to female gametophytes (i.e., prothalli).  Female gametophyte bears the female sex organs that is, archegonia. The microspores give mount to male gametophytes (i.e., Prothalli). This bears the male sex organs that is, antheridia. Sperms (i.e., antherozoids) generated by the antheridia travel to the female sex organ that is, archegonium found in female gametophyte. Both female and male gametophytes stay protected within their respective spores. The microspore is small and they are generated in big numbers and they are dispersed by wind from parent sporophyte, the male gametophyte which the microspore holds within is thus dispersed with it. The evolution of heterospory is a significant step towards the evolution of seed bearing the plants.
