Cell membranes are around 75A0 thick. Under electron microscope they come out to consist of three layers:

1. An outer electron dense layer of around 20Ao thick.

2. An inner electron dense layer of around 20Ao thick.

3. A middle pale colored layer of around 35Ao thick.

The outer and inner layers are built up of protein molecules while the middle one is composed of two layers of phospho lipid molecules. Such a trilaminar structure is termed as “Unit membrane” that is a fundamental concept of all membranes.
