The follicle which released ovum suffers the action of LH and is changed in the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum is especially important since it secretes estrogen and progesterone.

These hormones prepare the uterine mucosa, which is also called endometrium,  for nidation (implantation of zygote in uterine wall) and embryonic development as they stimulate the thickening of mucous tissue, raise its vascularity and form the appearing of uterine glycogen-producing glands.
