Thyroid and hypophysis
State the relation between thyroid and the hypophysis?
Expert
The hypophysis liberates TSH, thyroid-stimulating hormone. This hormone fast the liberation of thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine and thyroxine, or T3 and T4).When the concentration of the plasma of thyroid hormones is high this information is detected by hypothalamus and by hypophysis and this gland decreases the secretion of TSH. When the thyroid levels of hormone are low the secretion of TSH increases. It is therefore a negative feedback. Injuries of hypophysis which cause TSH hyposecretion such as, in case of tissue destruction or hypersecretion (in case, like, of excessive cell proliferation or cancer) may alter the functioning of thyroid gland completely.
